If you employ remote IT staff could they be a cybersecurity time bomb?
It's been a crazy week—and if you needed another thing to worry about, here’s a major cybersecurity wake-up call. North Korean hackers are infiltrating European businesses by posing as remote IT workers. Google’s Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) has uncovered a sophisticated scheme where cybercriminals embed themselves in companies under false identities. These so-called "IT warriors" are:
-Applying for remote IT jobs in European businesses
-Building trust with recruiters & faking references
-Creating multiple personas to boost their credibility
-Claiming they are from countries that include Italy, Japan, Malaysia, or the US.
Once inside, they will hope to steal company funds, extract sensitive business data, engage in corporate espionage, typically looking to steal intellectual property or maliciously disrupt operations.
How can SMEs protect themselves?
1. Rigorous verification: Conduct deep background checks on IT hires—don’t just rely on references.
2. Zero Trust approach: Limit system access until employees prove legitimacy over time.
3. Cybersecurity awareness: Train HR & IT teams to spot red flags in recruitment.
4. Multi-layer authentication: Use strict identity verification methods for remote access.
5. Don’t allow bring your own devices (BYOD) that sit outside of the normal IT environment
This isn’t just scaremongering—Google has flagged active cases in the UK, showing that this threat is already very real.
